Airline passengers are about to get some relief from the aggravating — and often surprising — costs connected to flying.

The U.S. Department of Transportation's rules taking effect today are designed to eliminate unexpected baggage costs and advertised fares that turn into unspectacular deals once surcharges and fees are added to the price. 

One provision, which goes into effect on Thursday, strikes at the heart of marketing strategies heavily used by discount fliers like Spirit Airlines. which operates out of Atlantic City. It requires airlines to advertise the actual price passengers will be charged, including any mandatory government taxes, fuel surcharges or special fees. Many of those costs have been relegated to small print on advertisements and travel websites.

Legalized sports betting is closer to happening in New Jersey.

The state legislature approved a law Monday that would let New Jerseyans bet on professional and college sports games at Atlantic City casinos and the state's four horse tracks.

Few things feel better in a gambler's paradise than the end of a long losing streak. And that's what Atlantic City has just experienced.

Casinos in the nation's second-largest gambling market posted a monthly revenue increase of 4.2 percent in December, marking the first time in 3½ years they had done so.

The city's 11 casinos took in $246.5 million in December. Slot machine revenue was up 8.3 percent, to $174.1 million, while table game revenue decreased by 4.3 percent, to $72.5 million.

The company planning to build what could be the nation's first offshore wind farm says it's ready to start construction on the multimillion-dollar project as soon as New Jersey officials give their approval.

Fishermen's Energy of Cape May wants to build the wind farm about 2.8 miles off Atlantic City. It plans to erect five wind turbines that would produce up to 25 megawatts, capable of powering about 10,000 homes.

WOODBURY — Steve Newsom’s children filled his bathtub with ice and water recently and told him to hop in. He needed to practice, they said, just as he’s always told them that practice makes perfect in any sports they play.

So Newsom, a Gloucester County Department of Corrections (DOC) Lieutenant, had to oblige. He sat in the freezing tub, and practiced for this Saturday’s sixth annual Wildwood Polar Bear Plunge.

Each year, teams of law enforcement and corrections officers splash in the Atlantic that laps at Wildwood’s shore.
